This year's Brij box: a red lid printed with a Bandhani-inspired pattern of stepped diamonds

The print on our boxes

Why Bandhani?

Bandhani takes its name from bandh, to tie. It is one of India's oldest ways of dyeing cloth, made for generations in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Artisans pinch up tiny points of fabric, bind each one tight with thread, and dip the cloth in dye. The dye can't reach under the thread, so when the knots come off, every one leaves a dot behind.

It's cloth for celebrations: weddings, festivals and family occasions, in the reds and yellows of good beginnings. It's also where our family began, in Rajasthan. So this year our boxes carry a print inspired by Bandhani, its knots redrawn as stepped diamonds that print crisply on card.

Bandh
"to tie", the root of the name
2 dips
Yellow first, then red. Knots tied between the dips stay yellow.
1 knot
for every single dot

Box design by Varsha. Bandhani was the starting point for this year's box, and Varsha turned it into the print you see on it. See her portfolio on Behance ↗

We had so much joy creating this for you, and we hope you enjoy it just as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Wishing you a Diwali filled with light, laughter, and lots of sweetness.

Happy Diwali!
